Let’s see, there are just as many apartments as there are homes. In fact, there are probably more apartments these days than homes. The only difference between an apartment and home is, apartments do not build equity. That is apartments do not appreciate in value over time. This is, for the most part, because the apartment is rented and not owned outright.
With this being said, there are some important things a first time apartment renter needs to keep in mind. Here is a list of things a renter needs to know when renting an apartment for the first time:
If it is time to move out of your parents home or you are college bound, it is best to treat apartment hunting like job hunting. That is, look presentable to the apartment manager or apartment owner. Remember; just because you do not own this room(s) for rent, it does not mean you have to apply for an apartment looking unreliable or irresponsible. Any apartment manager or owner wants to make sure you are honest enough to take care of the rented apartment and will make each months payment on time.
Now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. The very first thing any potential apartment renter needs to do is make sure their monthly income covers a first and last months rent. There is always a first deposit on the apartment and in case your apartment is destroyed or defaced in any way, that last months deposit will more than likely cover the cost to fix what was destroyed. Along with this timely advice, it is best not to use any credit cards that can not be paid off in full at the end of the month.
Being a first time renter means you are living on your own now. This also means, there is no one to help you pay the monthly rent fee, the water, garbage, any other utility fees which get tacked on to living on your own. Oh, at let’s not forget that each apartment comes equipped with a kitchen. Having a kitchen means you will more likely than not be cooking for yourself. Cooking your own food, instead of going out to eat, will save you an enormous amount of money. This also means, you have to budget wisely for the food you will be buying at the grocery store.
Finally, even if you see a lovely apartment in the location of your dreams, for a first time renter, this should not be a high priority. The only things that should be of concern to you are the price of the apartment, how you can budget for living in an apartment and if you can in fact drive to work from your apartment.
