The world unseen has received huge applause from worldwide audience, ever since its release. People usually refer to this film as a lesbian film. But the fact is that this film is much more than lesbianism. It won’t be wrong to say that ‘The World Unseen’ is a subtle and beautiful film which is based on women of all times and tells us about the different problems and pressures that a woman has to go through in her life.
The world unseen is one of the most challenging, as well as, entertaining films from world renowned lesbian film director and writer Shamim Sarif. The story of this film is based on the book written by Sarif herself, which is published by the same name. Although this book is the debut work from the writer, yet it is a flawless and refreshing piece of work. Sarif has put in her best to make both the book and the film equally entertaining and refreshing for her audience. The only difference is that, the actors in the lead roles in the film have added an extra life to the story.
The World Unseen has Lisa Ray and Sheetal Sheth in the lead roles and its story is set during the apartheid era of South Africa during the 1950s. One of the main characters in the film is of Amina who is a free spirited girl. She belongs to the conventional Indian community present in South Africa. But no rules and customs could stop her from doing what she likes to do. She has her own café which is open to all, be it the blacks or the whites. Her business partner is Jacob, who is a colored man, and she also has a waitress named Doris working in her café. Madeleine is a white local postmistress and a regular visitor to the café. Despite of all the racial barriers and laws practiced in the country, Madeleine and Jacob have an attraction towards each other.
The other lead character in the lesbian film is of Miriam, who is a caring mother and a subservient wife. Her husband Omar on the other hand is a chauvinistic and frustrated person. Although intelligent, Miriam never even imagined that she can make her own choice in life. She realizes this only after meeting Amina. Although both these women are of opposite natures, yet they start getting attracted towards each other, and their lives start to lose balance.
