5 tips to find a suitable apartment in Amsterdam

Therefore finding a suitable apartment in Amsterdam can be a daunting task. If you are moving to The Netherlands and would like to stay in Amsterdam, then my 5 tips will help you to find a suitable place to stay.
1: Focus on Great Amsterdam
Amsterdam and the surroundings cities such as Diemen, Duivendrecht are called Great Amsterdam (Groot Amsterdam). When looking for an apartment you should focus on Amsterdam and the cities around it. Those cities are reachable within 15 – 25 min by metro or car. Additionally renting an apartment in those cities is cheaper than renting one in Amsterdam.
2: Search in Dutch
Most expats use English search terms when searching for an apartment. Most Dutch people speak English but the media language is Dutch. Try to search in Dutch for rent house Amsterdam “huis verhuren Amsterdam” of broker Hoofddorp “makelaar Hoofddorp”. With those search term you might find a local real estate agency. You can always write your email in English.
3: Visit Funda and Pararius frequently
Visit the websites Funda and Pararius at least twice a day. Landlords and brokers use those websites to publish available properties. You might find a property on Funda that is not listed on Pararius. Funda focus on properties for sale and Pararius on properties for rent. On Funda you can find properties that are offered for rent as well.
4: Search in advance
Try to search at least 3 month prior to arrival for an apartment in Amsterdam. Due to its popularity available properties are rented fast. Try to contact local agencies, subscribe to the mailing list and give them a call once in a while.
5: Use the network of the local agencies
Local real estate agencies in Amsterdam are member of the Amsterdam Real Estate Brokers. They share the property list with each other before publishing on Funda or Pararius. Contacting an agency will give you head start in your search. Your agent will contact you as soon they see a property listed.
