What’s in the future of Doctor Who? This is a question that plaques Doctor Who fans every year. As we come closer to the fiftieth anniversary of the series one can only fathom what exactly is in store for our favorite Time Lord.
However the future of the Doctor looks very promising. As the years go by more and more new fans are growing up and loving the shows. Ratings are at an all time high. Merchandise adorns the shelves of stores for all manners of items from toys to clothing and even decoration. Yes, you can buy Doctor Who bed covers.
One small shadow looms over all of this popularity, the Doctor’s remaining regenerations. The Doctor, like all Time Lords, can only regenerate twelve times, equaling thirteen lives before his final death. The reasons behind this vary from source to source but the end result is the same, a Time Lord can only regenerate twelve times.
The current Doctor, Matt Smith, is the eleventh incarnation of the televised Time Lord. He happens to be my favorite. Although he has no intention of leaving the series, so he says, fans can’t help but wonder what would happen if he did leave. The Doctor only has two more regenerations left. This would mean that he only has two more lives, that is unless they use some clever writing to allow him to regenerate more. If your old enough to remember Dallas from the 80’s you will surely remember how they managed to bring Bobby back. It was all a dream!
Now most Doctors existed for a while but some are very short lived like the sixth, eighth and ninth Doctors. Some fans worry that the Doctor may be breezing through his remaining lives. However producer and script writer Barry Letts had this to say regarding what would happen when the Doctor reaches the end of his rope – “He would simply find a way to carry on.” And that is what the Doctor does, he finds a way.
Now in the context of the series’ plot lines, what’s in the future for Doctor Who is rather up in the air. We know of a character named River Song who is a fellow time traveler, she is seemingly romantically connected to the Doctor which gives light to the theory that the traveling Time Lord settles down one day.
The second question is regarding ‘the fall of the eleventh’ at the battle of Trenzalor. The Doctor is destined to do something completely horrible, something so terrible that it is to be known by everyone throughout time. Whatever this act may or may not be remains to be seen and it is rumored that it is the focal point of the upcoming seventh series of the television show. However, no matter what is in store for the Doctor, the Doctor will always overcome and win at the end of the day!
