The New York Jets are professional American Football team established in 1960 in New York Metropolitan area presently playing home games at Giant Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Giant Stadium is named after the other NFL team that also plays there New York Giants. The team home ground is scheduled to shift to Meadowland Stadium slated to open in 2010. The team’s training and corporate opened last year in 2008 at Florham Park, New Jersey, when it was shifted from Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York , the earlier team training centre.
The team was established as a charter member of the American Football League in 1960 as New York Titan. The team was renamed in 1963 as New York Jets after it was bought by Sonny Werblin led syndicate (including Martin, Hess, Lillis and Iselin) from the Harry Wismer . The team joined NFL after AFL- NFL Merger in 1970. The New York Jets created history being first AFL team to defeat an NFL club in 1969 when they defeated Baltimore Colts in AFL- NFL World Championship Game. Leon Hess bought out his partners with exception of Helen Dillon daughter of Lillis. She was his co -owner till 1984, when she sold her 25% interest in the team. Leon Hess retained ownership till his death in 2000 and it was sold to Robert Wood Johnson heir of Johnson & Johnson.
The New York Jets colors are White and Green and alternate color is Gold, Navy and White. The team nick name is Gang Green. The flight song of New York Jets is J-E_T_S, Jets, Jets Jets! It has also unofficial Mascot Fireman Ed and the cheerleaders are the Flight Crew. The best session for New York Jets was in 1968 during time of head coach Weeb Ewbank with 11-3 and worst session was in 1995 when under head coach Rich Kotite the team end session with 1-15.
The moments of glory for New York Jets fans have been in 1968 when they after a successful 8-5-1 season they hoped to win their divison and AFL championship. In Nov 17th games against Raiders in Oakland , NBC decided to start children movie Heidi in closing minutes of the high scoring games with the score at 32-29. Million of fans were left in dark and assumed the New York Jets have won. However, Raiders Strom back in the game and won 43-32. NBC was forced to apologies for the game now remembered as “The Heidi Game”. The New York Jets easily won the eastern division after finishing 11-3. The re-game was at New York Jets home stadium then Shea Stadium with a record 62,627 fans in the stadium. The New York Jets won 27-23, the win earned them a trip to AFL- NFL championship game, which was for the first time was officially being called Super Bowl. The New York Jets were going into Super Bowl III; as underdogs against powerhouse called Baltimore Colts. The New York Jets won the Super Bowl. Joe Namarth ran off the field to the locker holding up the finger pointing to the fact “We’re Number 1”.
The New York Jets have also won the Divisonal Championships 4 times in 1968, 1969, 1998 and 2002. They also have twelve time playoff appearances in 1968, 1969, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1986, 1991, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2006.
The New York Jets have retired numbers to honor the players; Joe Namath ( Quarter Back 1965-76) No 12, Don Maynard ( WR ,1960-72) No 13 & Joe Klecko ( DE 1977-1987) No 73. The New York Jets’ Hall of Fame includes Coach Weeb Ewbank 1963-73, Ronnie Lotts S 1994, Don Maynard WR 1960-1972, Art Monk WR 1994, Joe Namath QB 1965-1976 & John Riggins RB 1971-75.
The New York Jets have also won AFL Rookie of the year twice in 1964 for Matt Snell FB and 1965 Joe Namath QB. They have also won three Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1988 for Erik McMilllan S, 1995 Hugh Douglas DE & in 2004 Jonathan Vilma LB. Joe Namath QB won the AFL Player of the year in 1968.
The New York Jets had a good season in 2006 with 10-6 they got into playoff. However in Playoff the Patriots pulled a close game to end in tame score of 37-16. The 2007 season was really not good with team tally of 4-12. This was followed by remaking roster as several player parted way and many new players were inducted. The New York Jets celebrated “Titian Throwback Day” by wearing navy and gold uniform in honor of New York Titans (As they were earlier known) during game against Philadelphia Eagles and also honored four original Titian who played as New York Jets in Super Bowl III. This uniform was worn in 2008 season. 40th anniversary of Super Bowl III was celebrated on Oct 26th, 2008 match against Kansas City. The team held halftime ceremony to honor many championship Alumni. However the 2008 also didn’t meet the expectations of the owners and fans and New York Jets changed head coach Mangini with Rex Ryan.
