Completed in 1999, the Jin Mao Tower was the tallest structure in China for eight years. Jin mao literally means ‘Golden Prosperity Building’. The tower has eighty eight floors, measures nearly 421 metres in height, and is situated in Shanghai’s Pudong District. The tower houses a shopping mall, several restaurants, a hotel and even a nightclub. It is currently the tallest building in Shanghai, second only to the Shanghai World Financial Centre, just next to it; although both buildings will be shorter than the Shanghai Tower once it is completed. Designed by architect Adrian D Smith, the tower combines modern architectural styles with traditional Chinese designs.
One of the main attractions here is the observation deck which is on the 88th floor. The observation deck can hold roughly one thousand people and offers amazing panoramic views of the entire city. There are several ways to get to this site; the City Sightseeing Bus stops in front of the building, while those coming by subway should get off at the Lujiazui Station and take exit 5. The parking area is located in the basement which has the capacity to hold about eight hundred cars and nearly two thousand bicycles. Tourists with a little extra time after having visited the tower can also visit the nearby Shanghai Ocean Aquarium and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower.
