You may have seen the wisdom in decorating the rooms of your home with cellular shades. Cellular blinds give a beautiful look to any room, and provide your home with excellent energy efficiency as well as blackout qualities. Over time, however, the cord used to draw the shade up and down can wear out and even break. You might think that you will have to replace the entire shade, but it is fairly simple to just replace the cord instead, saving you a great deal of money.
You will need to contact the manufacturer of the cellular shades in order to get a replacement cord. They will be able to match the size when you give them the number that is printed on the inner part of the head portion of the blind.
Once you have the replacement cord in the correct length in hand, you can go about making the repair. It is easiest to keep the shade mounted while doing this repair. You may also want to take a few photos of how the cord is routed through the mechanism just in case. You will need to find the spot where the break has occurred in the original cord, and attach the new cord to the old one. You can use masking tape to connect the two ends. If the old cord has become frayed at the broken part, just trim away the excess with some scissors before taping them together. Then look at the header of the blind and find the cord separator, and begin to pull on the old cord that is connected to the new cord. As you pull, it will work its way through the window blind, without too much effort on your part. Do this to the top first, and repeat the process on the bottom, after taking out the bottom rail stopper.
Once you see the taped ends of cord emerge from the bottom, pull the cord so that the new cord is pulled through the ladder and bottom mechanism. At this point, you put a knot in the new cord ends and put it inside the bottom holder with the ends of the ladder and then plug it off. At the top of the cellular blinds, you will want to pull any slack up so that the cord is at the proper tautness, and knot the cord.
You can also purchase a restringing kit from certain cellular shades companies, also making it easy to do the repair yourself. In addition, there are companies that will offer you the service of replacing the cords for you if that seems a better option for you.
