Positive psychology is a relatively new form of an age old science, which was started in 1998. Positive psychology focuses on creating a happy mind and a healthy lifestyle. This form of psychology takes the view that emotions can lead to a happy mind, not just indicate one. Although this form of treatment is in its’ infancy stages, you can trace it back to early pioneers like Abraham Maslow.
What is Positive Psychology?
Positive psychology is the study of what stimuli make life most fulfilling. Psychologist focus on treating actual mental illnesses, while helping people to identify and benefit from positive stimuli in their life. This method is also used to create a “happy mind” in those who do not have a mental illness but are looking to increase their outlook on life.
The History of Positive Psychology
In order to fully understand positive psychology, we must first look to its predecessor, Humanistic Psychology. This form of psychology was prevalent in the early to mid-20th century, which is of course when psychology made the transition into being an accepted mainstream science. Humanistic psychology was very effective and focused on the benefits of a happy mind. Prior to this, psychology was not viewed as a legitimate science, so early predecessors to today’s positive psychology were developed by philosophers and religious leaders.
Positive Psychology and Your Happy Mind
As I touched on briefly, positive psychology focuses of finding out what makes you happy. The very goal of this psychology is to study and achieve ways to help you have a happy mind. Many psychologists feel that your current emotions are only a sign of how you feel. Positive psychologists on the other hand believe that your feelings lead to happiness. To understand you, a positive psychologist would focus on finding past events that make you experience joy, and then showing you how to harness them to improve your mood and give you a “happy mind”
In summary, positive psychology is the form of the trade that focuses on creating a happy mind for you. By studying your feeling and traits, data is gathered and hypotheses are formed about which feelings and traits are most influential in creating a positive feeling in your life. If you are looking to create a happy mind and a healthy lifestyle, positive psychology may be great for you.In addition to focusing on past emotions, positive psychologists also study character traits. Work ethics, courage, and your ability to handle stress are just a few of those traits. The end goal of studying your traits is to find the ones that are most beneficial to creating a happy mind, and increasing your overall satisfaction with life.
