By now, you know that you need to supplement your diet with the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA because they can not be made by your own body. These long chain omega-3 fatty acids should be part of your daily diet because they are so important maintaining the health of your body. Highly filtered, toxin-free grades of fish oil are essential to be sure that you’re getting the benefits of fish oil without getting the impurities that can cause harm. If the fish oil supplements you choose are ultra refined, you can be sure that they will have a high concentration of EPA and DHA.
Fish oil production is broken down into three different grades based on their level of quality. The three main grades of fish oil include Cod Liver Fish Oil, Health-Food Grade Fish Oil and Pharmaceutical-Grade Fish Oil.
Cod Liver Oil The lowest grade of fish oil, cod liver oil, should only be used in small amounts as an ideal supplement. This form of fish oil may contain certain contaminants such as DDT, PCB’s and mercury. One teaspoon of cod liver oil contains 500 mg of long chain omega 3 fatty acids. Taking large daily doses of this type of fish oil may not be safe.
Health Food Fish Oil This better quality fish oil is one that is sourced from a particular species of fish such as salmon. This type of health food grade fish oil undergoes a slightly more intense purification process by means of limited molecular distillation. This distillation also removes some of its cholesterol content. An even more purified version of this health food grade version of fish oil is known as fish oil concentrate. The extra filtering creates a more purified form of fish oil with lesser amounts of contaminants than cod liver oil. Generally, this type of fish oil contains a higher concentration of omega 3 fatty acids. A single one gram capsule contains about 300 mg of omega 3 fatty acids. One capsule of a thermally fractionated health food grade can contain as much as 500 mg of long chain omega 3 fatty acids.
Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil Pharmaceutical grade fish oil is the most pure form of fish oil supplements. Specialized equipment is used to detect even the tiniest amount of contaminants in the fish oil. Because it is so highly refined, it is up to one thousand times purer than health food grade fish oils. Pharmaceutical grade fish oil also contains more omega 3 fatty acids than the previous two fish oil grades. A one gram of this type of fish oil contains around 600 mg of long chain omega 3 fatty acids. As the most refined of the three grades of fish oil, it contains the smallest amount of contaminants.
In order to get the purest and most potent fish oil supplements be sure to specify pharmaceutical grade fish oil. You will be getting the highest level of omega-3 fatty acids and the lowest level of contaminants.
