The class 1 filters do not become fuel when they are exposed to flame. This means they produce only negligible amount of smoke when they are burnt. The class 2 filters however become ready fuel when exposed to the flame. These produce moderate amounts of smoke while burning.
Air filters come in various shapes and sizes to match the flow area of air. They are prone to get clogged with dirt from the air and so they should be cleaned or changed regularly. Clogging of air filters causes impure air and reduces the free flow of air along the passages.

Paper is one of the most common materials that are used for air cleaner filters in automobiles. This is mainly because they are cost effective as well as efficient. Also these are easily replaceable. Oil wetted foam elements are also known to be used as air filters in automobiles. Foam was a known choice for air cleaners in many applications before the improvement in air cleaning technology.
