Seoul, being South Korea’s capital, gets a lot more attention than Busan, which is unfortunate, because Busan is an absolutely beautiful city. It has many things that Seoul cannot offer, and should be on everyone’s hit-list for things to do and see in Korea. If you find yourself in Busan, here are some things you should check out:
1) If you’re looking for beaches, Korea is surrounded by them (after all, it’s a peninsula!). However, none of the beaches get quite as much attention as Haeundae Beach, which is simply gorgeous. A word to the wise: don’t go during the peak season in summer. Everybody goes during the peak season, and – as a result – the beach gets so crowded that it’s almost standing room only. Visit during the fall, when it’s not as hot yet just as beautiful.
2) The Jagalchi Fish Market is unlike any fish market you’ll find in Seoul. It’s not pristine or beautiful the way Haeundae beach is beautiful, but that doesn’t make it any less amazing. It’s a long stretch of stalls run by Ajummas (Old Korean Women) with all of the freshest catches of the day. You’ll see crabs crawling out of their sandboxes and octopuses splashing their way out of their tubs.
3) If you’re a fan of shopping, then you should definitely check out the Shinsegae department store, also located in Haeundae Beach. It’s the biggest department store in the world, and has a huge Guinness Book of World Records banner across its front to prove it. The entire department store is overwhelmingly massive, big enough to house movie theatres, luxury spas, and even an ice rink.
Busan has a lot more to offer than just these three places – like other great markets and absolutely stunning temples – but what are listed here are good starts if you plan on exploring more of Busan. If you ever do have the chance to get outside of Seoul to see more of South Korea, make sure you head down to Busan. You won’t regret the experience one bit!
