Film capacitors that are also known as plastic film capacitors, film dielectric capacitors, or polymer film capacitors, power film capacitors and so on are electrical capacitors. They use insulating plastic film as the dielectric. They are most commonly called film caps. Due to dielectric films which are of different dielectric strength are extremely thin and use electrodes. This makes the film capacitors very small in size and they are used in various fields for this property. Film capacitors are designed as per industry styles. Common styles are axial style for point-to-point and through-hole mounting, radial style (single ended) for through-hole solder mounting on printed circuit boards, SMD style for printed circuit board surface mounting, with metallized contacts on two opposite edges and so on. Film capacitors are generally divided in three types – film/foil capacitors, metallized film capacitors, and mixed technology capacitors. Film/foil capacitors consist of two metal foil electrodes made of aluminum foil separated by a piece of plastic film. Basis on the material of plastic film, film capacitors are namely polyester film capacitors, polypropylene film capacitors, polycarbonate film capacitors, mixed dielectric film capacitors and so on.
Polyester film capacitors use polyester dielectric and basis on this, they are suitable for a variety of electrical equipment. Due to being made of polyester dielectric, this capacitor proves to be better than many other types of capacitors keeping the cost and usefulness in mind. They key characteristics of polyester film capacitors include high dielectric strength which means that very high voltage capacitors can be manufactured in a relatively very small size. Polyester capacitors have a low equivalent series resistance. They have high tolerance against temperature, due to qualities of dielectric, they withstand the temperature up to 125°C. Usually polyester film capacitors have a tolerance of 5% or 10%, which is sufficient for many applications but for higher requirements of tolerance, better tolerance capacitors are also available at very affordable cost these days.
The construction and dielectric strength of polyester and PET capacitors allows them to be used in applications where sharp, fast rise time spikes are present. Apart from other industrial usage, these capacitors are widely used for energy-saving lamps and LED power circuits. With their energy efficiency, they save a lot of cost and hence are very beneficial for any business. Such bulbs and electronic equipment are perfect for offices and workplaces where they are needed in bulk. The electricity bill can be cut down to a great extent which saves you a lot of money.
