Cats are naturally independent and adventurous creatures so they should be allowed to go outdoors from time to time. If you have a cat at home, you should install cat doors in strategic places in the house to allow your cat to go outdoors every now and then. After installing cat doors in your home, train your cat to use these doors to go outside and then come back inside the house.
Teaching your feline friend how to use cat doors can be a bit challenging. Some cats are rather reluctant to use cat doors for various reasons. To help your cat get comfortable with the idea of using cat doors, here are some tips for you.
Show Your Cat How To Use The Door
After the cat doors have been installed, take your cat to them. Gently put your cat in front of the cat door and hold it with one hand, then use the other hand to push the door so that the cat can see that it leads outside. Your cat might not want to go outside or might not want to use the door. While still holding the door open, gently make your cat go through the door with the other hand. Another thing you can try is placing something the cat likes on the other side of the door.
It may take a while before your cat gets used to the idea of using the cat doors instead of the kitchen door to get out. In fact, it may take a while before your cat stops pestering you to open the kitchen door and let him out. To train your cat to use the cat doors in the house, do not open the kitchen door to let him out. Instead of opening the kitchen door, pick up your cat and bring it to the cat door, open the flap and gently push your cat outside. Repeat this process until your cat gets the idea that it can go out of the house without your help.
Before allowing the cat to go out, make sure that it’s wearing a collar. If your cat gets lost or something happens to it, it will be almost impossible to get it back if it doesn’t have a collar with information about how to contact you.
Also, to insure that the cat doesn’t get stuck, make sure that the doors are not obstructed or have obstacles. Never place heavy objects close to cat doors, and if you have children, teach them to keep away from them.
