An acoustic calibrator
As Noise News informs there are essentially two ways of calibrating sound level meters and one is by using an Acoustic Calibrator.
The Acoustic Calibrator is fitted over the microphone of the noise level meter and outputs a consistent sound level that the microphone can detect. If there are deviances between the sound level output of the Acoustic Calibrator and what the microphone is receiving, the sound level meter is able to offset the differences.
The recalibration of a sound level meter involves the device and the Acoustic Calibrator being sent back to the manufacturer, so they can calibrate and authenticate these sound level monitoring instruments. The process involves the manufacturer checking the internal components to ensure that the performance produced by the devices is the same high quality it was when they were manufactured.
Whilst some noise level experts believe that the calibration of sound level meters should be done by the manufacturer each year, according to the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, a sound level meter should be returned to its original manufacturer every two years. The 2005 Noise at Work Regulations also state that Acoustic Calibrators should be returned to the manufacturer on a yearly basis.

To start the calibration of noise level meters, turn the calibrator close to the sound level meter’s microphone and then switch the device on. It will then calibrate the sound level meter.
Performing the calibration should result in the sound meter level showing a noise level that is equal, or extremely close to being equal, to the output level.
